P stands for puncture- 38 is how may times it took to go around the "John Wayne Candybar Can" and the hole in the top of the P-38 was used to dip it in boiling water to clean after use!! HOOAH
This 1-1/2 inch stamped metal tool that was developed to open C-Ration cans in only 30 days in the Summer of 1942 by the Subsistence Research Laboratory in Chicago.

It's official designation is 'P-38 Can Opener, Key Type', but the P-38 supposedly acquired it's namefrom the 38 punctures required to open a C-Ration can. It's also known by many as a "John Wayne".


P-38's were issued in cases of C- rations in this little brown paper with instructions on how to use it. These Can Opener's do not come packaged.
